FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a single-reactor process for the preparation of 4-methyl-1-nitropentene-1 of formula I. Process is carried out by reacting nitromethane II with isovaleric aldehyde III in the presence of sodium carbonate and a phase transfer catalyst, followed by treating the reaction product with acetic anhydride and further heating the resulting derivative in the presence of sodium carbonate in accordance with the diagram below. Process is characterized in that sodium nitromethane is used as the catalyst for the reaction of nitromethane with isovaleric aldehyde in an amount of 10 mol% in combination with 15-crown-5 in an amount of 2 mol%, the reaction being carried out using equimolar amounts of nitromethane and isovaleraldehyde.

EFFECT: proposed method makes it possible to obtain 4-methyl-1-nitropentene-1 in 80–85 % yield and is economically advantageous and ecologically safe.
