SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the modulation of a modular multilevel converter and isolation of damage to a submodular unit. This modulation method includes the first mode and the second mode, acting cyclically. In the first mode, the first power semiconductor switch and the second power semiconductor switch are turned on alternately, while the third power semiconductor switch is off, and the fourth power semiconductor switch is turned on. In the second mode, the third power semiconductor switch and the fourth power semiconductor switch are turned on alternately, while the first power semiconductor switch is turned on, and the second power semiconductor switch is turned off.

EFFECT: temperature equalization of contacts used by power semiconductor switches, expanding the safe operation limits of the converter, effectively increasing the capacity of the converter without increasing engineering costs and achieving improved performance technically speaking.
