SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the sorting of materials. In particular, a method for sorting materials is disclosed, comprising: providing a sample; reducing the size of the sample to 10 cm or less; determining minimum x-ray absorption of the thickest bed depth of the sample; measuring x-ray absorption of pieces of the sample; identifying pieces of the sample having x-ray absorption greater than the minimum x-ray absorption of the thickest bed depth; wherein identification of pieces of the sample is the identification of pieces of the sample having x-ray percent transmissions that are reduced by 20 % or more compared to the x-ray percent transmissions of the minimum x-ray absorption of the thickest sample layer; sorting from the sample pieces of the sample with x-ray percent transmissions, which are reduced by 20 % or more compared to the x-ray percent transmission of the minimum x-ray absorption of the thickest layer of the sample.

EFFECT: invention can be used in the enrichment of coal or ore.
