SUBSTANCE: invention relates to image processing. Device for detecting the tear of a banknote comprises: an image collection unit; a preprocessing unit for locating and cutting out the foreground area in the image signal of a banknote tear detection unit for detecting the presence or absence of a tear; control unit; and a determination unit for determining whether the banknote is authenticated according to the detection result from the tear detection unit, moreover, the rule of definition is that if there is no strain on any of the four edges of the banknote, then the entered banknote is certified and accepted, if the entered banknote has a tear and the length of the edge of the tear is greater than the preset threshold or the depth of the tear is greater than the preset threshold, then the entered banknote is not authenticated and is rejected, and if the entered banknote has a tear and the length of the edge of the tear is less than the preset threshold and the depth of the tear is less than the preset threshold, then the entered banknote is certified and accepted.

EFFECT: technical result is improving the accuracy of detecting the tear of a banknote.
