SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the measurement of distances. Method of determining the distance to a moving air object by the passive location method involves obtaining an optical image of a moving air object; converting the resulting image to digital; recognizing image based on the digitized image, defining image parameters taking into account projection distortions; determining the range to a moving object as the product of the focal length of the optical system by the ratio of the actual linear dimension to the length of the image of the moving air object, taking into account projection distortions. To obtain an optical image, a high-definition television system is used, taking into account the projection distortions using the value of the angle of the ratio of the vertical to the horizontal projection of the line connecting the ends of the wings calculated as the arctangent, and the actual linear dimensions of the moving air object are determined by identifying its type according to the design features of its image and using a specialized database.

EFFECT: expanded arsenal of the navigation capabilities of moving objects by measuring the range to a moving air object with passive location facilities using an automated computational algorithm that excludes errors related to the human factor.
