SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a vapour-liquid contact tray apparatus for use in a separation column. According to a first aspect of the invention, the vapour-liquid contact tray apparatus includes a tray having a plurality of apertures for passage of fluid. Apertures are arranged to form a triangular configuration of adjacent apertures. Centres of adjacent apertures within each row are located at a distance of 2.5 to 4.5 times the average length of the apertures, adjacent rows are located at a distance of 1.5 to 2.5 times the average width of the apertures. Tray is configured to be supported by a tray support, having aerating apertures. According to a second aspect of the invention, the vapour-liquid contact tray apparatus includes a tray and a tray support having aerating apertures. One or more apertures are partially covered with a coating that is arranged to interact with vapour passing through the aerating apertures. More than 50 % of the vapour passing through the apertures is directed transversely along the tray.
