SUBSTANCE: invention relates to cross-flow plates in mass exchange columns, where mass exchange and/or heat exchange processes take place, and, in particular, to the apparatus and methods of making the support structure for such cross-flow plates. Disclosed is support structure (28) for fixing cross-flow plates (26) vertically spaced apart relative to each other in mass exchange column (10). Support structure (28) includes chordal wall (64), which contains vertically passing opposite ends, which are fixed on external barrel (12) of mass-exchange column (10). Each cross-flow plate (26) includes web (30) of the plate of column with openings (60) for flow of fluid medium and at least one chordal drain cup (32). Chordal drain cups (32) are vertically aligned on each cross-flow plate (26) and include channels (42) of drain cups, formed by spaced apart walls (38, 40) of drain cups. Chordal wall (64) extends vertically through channels (42) of drain cups on cross-flow plates (26), and walls (38, 40) of drain cups are connected to chordal wall (64) for transfer of load from plates (30) of tray of columns and walls (38, 40) of drain cups to chordal wall (64).
