SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of metallurgy, in particular, to the protective and hardening coatings development by the made of structural and special steels articles chemical and thermal treatment methods, and can be used in industrial production during the articles mass production at the automotive, aviation, shipbuilding and machine tool industries enterprises, during the agricultural tools and units production, and also for the complex laboratory researches performance. Method of the steel article hardening by ion-plasma carbonitriding comprises the treated article placement into the vacuum chamber, provision of initial vacuum by the air evacuation, process gas mixture feeding into the vacuum chamber, generation of the nitrogen and carbon ions containing plasma, with the glow discharge initiation and the articles treatment in the resulting plasma. Air is evacuated to the pressure of 5 Pa, the process gas mixture feeding is performed until the pressure in the vacuum chamber is 20–50 Pa is ensured. Said process gas mixture contains components in the following ratio, wt.%: argon 25–50, nitrogen 25–50, carbon dioxide 25–50. After the said operations, performing the treated article resistive heating, and the said plasma is generated by means of the high-frequency electric field with the frequency of 13.6 MHz, plasma focusing and nitrogen and carbon ions acceleration is carried out by the constant or pulsed unipolar electric field application, which creates the electrical bias on the treated article. Treatment of articles in the resulting plasma is carried out by means of the nitrogen and carbon ions implantation and thermal diffusion.

EFFECT: enabling increase in the of hardening coatings quality and expansion in the method application range by increase in the varying of the processing conditions possibilities.
