SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method for purifying a fraction of a head ethyl alcohol obtained as a by-product in the production of marketable ethanol. Method involves treatment with an alkaline reagent and distillation with extraction of the end product. Treatment with an alkaline reagent is carried out till the pH of the reaction mixture is not less than 11.0. Mixture is held until a stable brown colour and prior to distillation, the mixture is neutralized with a pH-reducing reagent to pH of not more than 5.1.

EFFECT: method enables to obtain purified alcohol-containing distillate with output of more than 82 % and degree of purification from carbonyl impurities of more than 82 %.
