FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention describes a method of treating a zeolite catalyst for dimethyl ether carbonylation to obtain methyl acetate, carbonylation methods involving reacting dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of a zeolite catalyst to obtain a reaction product - methyl acetate, and a method of producing acetic acid. According to the processing method, the zeolite catalyst is reacted with a treatment gas containing water vapor in an amount of at least 1 mol. %., and at temperature below temperature, at which dealumination of zeolite structure takes place. Zeolite comprises at least one channel formed by 8-member ring and has type of frame structure selected from group including MOR, FER, OFF and GME. Method of producing methyl acetate by carbonylation of dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of a treated zeolite catalyst involves the steps of: (i) reacting the zeolite catalyst with treatment gas using said method; and (ii) stopping reaction of the catalyst with steam; and (iii) reacting the treated catalyst with dimethyl ether and carbon monoxide to obtain a reaction product - methyl acetate. Method of producing acetic acid involves obtaining methyl acetate by said method, extraction of methyl acetate from the reaction product and conversion of a certain amount of extracted methyl acetate or all extracted methyl acetate to acetic acid.
