SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of carbonylating dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst which contains a zeolite, to obtain a reaction product containing methyl acetate, where method is carried out at temperature equal to 250 to 350 °C, raw material for carrying out the method contains dimethyl ether, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methyl acetate, and one or more compounds containing a functional hydroxy group are selected from water, aliphatic C1-C4-alcohol and aliphatic C1-C4-carboxylic acid, and the ratio of the number of moles of hydrogen to the amount of moles of carbon monoxide in the feed is at least 1, and the ratio of the number of moles of methyl acetate to the number of moles of one or more compounds, containing a functional hydroxy group, ranges from 500:1 to 0.5:1. Invention also relates to a method of maintaining or reducing the rate of deactivation of a catalyst in a method of carbonylating dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst and to use of one or more compounds containing functional hydroxy group, to maintain or reduce the rate of deactivation of the catalyst in a method of carbonylating dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst which contains a zeolite to obtain a reaction product, containing methyl acetate, where method is carried out at temperature equal to 250 to 350 °C, used in the method raw material contains dimethyl ether, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methyl acetate, and the ratio of the number of moles of hydrogen to the amount of moles of carbon monoxide in the feedstock is equal to at least 1, and where the feedstock additionally contains one or more compounds containing a functional hydroxy group, selected from water, aliphatic C1-C4-alcohol and aliphatic C1-C4-carboxylic acid.

EFFECT: disclosed is a carbonylation method for producing methyl acetate.
