FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the preparation of methyl acetate by carbonylation of dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of hydrogen and a zeolite catalyst, in which at the first step carbonylation is carried out at a molar ratio of the amount of carbon monoxide to the amount of hydrogen of at least 1, and at the second and next step, carbonylation is carried out at a molar ratio of the amount of hydrogen to the amount of carbon monoxide greater than 1.
EFFECT: invention also relates to a method for improving the performance of a zeolite catalyst in the preparation of methyl acetate by carbonylation of dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide in the presence of hydrogen and said catalyst.
