SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of carbonylating dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide gas in the presence of a zeolite carbonylation catalyst, said method comprising successive steps (i) pretreating the catalyst and (ii) carbonylating dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide gas to obtain a reaction product containing methyl acetate; where the catalyst pre-treatment carried out at step (i) comprises steps of (a) bringing the catalyst into contact with a first treatment mixture containing water vapor, (b) adding a catalyst treated in step (a) with a second treatment mixture containing an inert gas and at least one of dimethyl ether and methanol; and (c) stopping treatment with the inert gas component of the second mixture.
EFFECT: by pretreatment of the zeolite carbonylation catalyst with water vapor and additionally with a mixture of inert gas and at least one of dimethyl ether and methanol, reduced uncontrolled coking of catalyst, which provides reduced amount of released heat and improved catalytic activity in methods of carbonylation of dimethyl ether with carbon monoxide gas to obtain a reaction product containing methyl acetate.
