FIELD: internal combustion engines.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in systems of heat exchange of exhaust gases of internal combustion engines. Method of diagnosing spent gas heat exchanger consists in indicating degradation of characteristics of heat exchange system (150), which discharges exhaust gases through outlet valve (175) from area downstream of catalytic neutraliser (173) of exhaust gases into heat exchanger (176) into bypass channel (174) of exhaust gases. Deterioration of characteristics is indicated by results of estimates of first temperature of exhaust gases and pressure of exhaust gases upstream of heat exchanger (176), result of evaluation of second temperature of exhaust gases downstream of heat exchanger (176) and temperature of cooling liquid circulating through heat exchanger (176). Version of the exhaust gas heat exchanger diagnostic method and an engine system are disclosed.

EFFECT: technical result consists in improvement of diagnostics reliability of each of components of heat exchange system of exhaust gases.
