Control device for an internal combustion engine includes an electronic control module configured to perform intermixing control processing in a first mode and a second mode. Processing of mixing control is processing for control of fuel injection valve so that air-fuel ratio is at least one cylinder from number of cylinders becomes lean air-fuel ratio, and air-fuel ratio of cylinders, differing from at least one cylinder, becomes enriched air-fuel ratio, when such condition is established, that there is a request for filter restoration. In the second mode, the absolute value of the difference between the air-fuel ratio in the combustion cylinder of the lean mixture and the air-fuel ratio in the combustion cylinder of the enriched mixture is less than in the first mode.
EFFECT: prevention of filter temperature dropping below the temperature range suitable for recovery treatment during filter restoration treatment.
