SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a control device and to a control method for an internal combustion engine, which includes a plurality of cylinders, a filter configured to trap solid particles in the exhaust gas discharged from the cylinders. Control device for an internal combustion engine includes an electronic control module configured to perform intermixing control processing in a first mode and a second mode. Processing of mixing control is processing for control of fuel injection valve so that air-fuel ratio is at least one cylinder from number of cylinders becomes lean air-fuel ratio, and air-fuel ratio of cylinders, differing from at least one cylinder, becomes enriched air-fuel ratio, when such condition is established, that there is a request for filter restoration. In the second mode, the absolute value of the difference between the air-fuel ratio in the combustion cylinder of the lean mixture and the air-fuel ratio in the combustion cylinder of the enriched mixture is less than in the first mode.

EFFECT: prevention of filter temperature dropping below the temperature range suitable for recovery treatment during filter restoration treatment.
