FIELD: pulp industry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of using cellulose, more specifically to methods of producing dispersions of cellulose as an organic biodegradable thickener for lubricants, including greases. Method of producing a cellulose thickener for lubricants involves preparing a cellulose suspension in a medium of a proton-donor precipitator – alcohol containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or water. First, cellulose is added to a mixture of solvents containing N-methylmorpholine N-oxide and polar aprotic cosolvent with Hildebrand solubility parameter from 22.5 to 25.0 MPa1/2. Then, produced mixture is stirred at temperature of 80 °C to 140 °C to obtain a solution of cellulose with concentration of 0.5–5 wt % and precipitator is added with formation of cellulose suspension by phase decomposition. Then it is washed with precipitator until mixture of solvents is removed.

EFFECT: high effective viscosity and yield point of concentrated cellulose suspensions.
