SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a device and a method for measuring body characteristics, specifically to selecting a mattress in accordance with body characteristics. Device for determining body characteristics comprises an inclined platform, a flexible gripping sheet configured to fit the body, wherein the flexible gripping sheet in a rest position defines a plane having an X axis, an Y axis and an Z axis, wherein the flexible gripping sheet also has registration marks, wherein axis Z is perpendicular to said plane, wherein in the rest position the registration marks are in the first positions, the supercharger of air directed to the flexible gripping sheet for the purpose of fitting the body with the flexible gripping sheet, and a camera configured to observe registration marks in second positions of registration marks obtained when the body has a flexible gripping sheet, wherein the angle of view of the camera is shifted relative to the axis Z. Method of determining body shape characteristics comprises steps of providing a device, providing a camera, recording first positions by means of a camera, applying the body so that it rests on the flexible gripping sheet, injecting air onto the flexible gripping sheet to make the body fit the flexible gripping sheet, causing movement of the registration marks into the second positions, recording the second positions of the registration marks.
