SUBSTANCE: invention relates to context-adaptive selection of a scanning order, and more specifically to a decoding unit for decoding coefficients of a video sequence and an encoder for encoding coefficient coefficients of a video sequence. Disclosed is a decoder for decoding coefficients of blocks of a video sequence from a bit stream, comprising: a module for decoding one or more coefficients vectors of each block from a bit stream; a verification module which is capable of recovering, for at least one block, hidden information from one or more coefficients of said block. Hidden information makes or forms part of scanning order information associated with said block; a scanning order selector for selecting a scanning order for each block from a set of scanning orders, preferably from a set of predetermined and generated scanning orders, based on scanning order information associated with said block; reserializing unit for reverse scanning for each block of one or more coefficients vectors of said block in accordance with the scanning order selected for said block to obtain a matrix of coefficients.
