SUBSTANCE: invention relates to construction, in particular to laboratory methods for determining mechanical characteristics of soils. Method for laboratory determination of mechanical characteristics of soils involves axial compression of a soil sample using a piston in conditions of impossibility of lateral expansion with obtaining deformation characteristics of soil and after completion of compression - cyclic indentation of die into sample with obtaining characteristics of soil strength, wherein die load gradually increases to limit value. Limiting value of load on the die is determined according to the curve of dependence of change of residual deformations on pressure under the die, built according to the results of cyclic indentation and unloading of the die, At the same time providing in each subsequent cycle equal increase of value of maximum pressure on soil under stamp, at which unloading begins. Then, another pressure is applied to the second soil sample through the piston, and after conditional stabilization of deformations, similar investigations are carried out as at the first pressure. Obtained results are used to determine the ultimate soil pressure, based on simulation data using the Plaxis finite element computer system at given pressure values under the piston, graphs of limiting pressure are plotted depending on combinations of values of soil strength characteristics - angle of internal friction ϕ and specific adhesion with and by intersection of corresponding graphs, ϕ and p.
