FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: instrument for biological analysis comprises a base, an excitation source, an optical sensor, an optical excitation system and an optical emission system. Base is configured to receive a sample holder comprising a plurality of biological samples. Optical sensor is configured to receive emissions from biological samples in response to the excitation source. Instrument can additionally comprise a lens of the sensor enclosed in the lens body and a focusing mechanism comprising a mechanism which engages the lens body, where the focusing mechanism is accessible from outside the housing for controlling the focus, as well as a sensor opening located along the optical emission path, and a blocking structure arranged to interact with the sensor opening so that no reflected radiation from the illuminated surface near the sample holder, which is also not reflected by the other tool surface, is received by the optical sensor.
