FIELD: electrolytic processes.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for electrolytic production of aluminium using solid electrodes. The method includes horizontal or vertical arrangement of electrodes submerged in an electrolyte, forming an interpolar distance between said electrodes, wherein a variable interpolar distance is set between the opposite surfaces of the anodes and cathodes, wherein the variable interelectrode distance lx is set depending on the current distance x from the centre to the edge of the electrode L in the range L x ≤ L and accounting for the fixed values of the current density j, voltage losses Uelt in an electrolyte with a specific electrical resistance Ƿel in accordance with a predetermined ratio. The dimensions of the electrodes are adjusted until the ratio of the current density of the cathode to that of the anode is in the range of 1 to 5.5. In proportion to said ratio of the current densities, the coefficient Kj varies within the range of 1.3 to 2.5.

EFFECT: uniform distribution of the current density over the area of the electrodes, elimination of cathode passivation and reduction of anode consumption, production of aluminium in accordance with the quality standards are ensured.
