FIELD: machine building.
SUBSTANCE: modal attenuator comprises annular chambers arranged between attenuator housing and perforated screen surrounding main flow channel. In some configurations modal attenuator is made in the form of expander section. In some configurations the height and/or width of the annular chambers can vary in the longitudinal direction of the attenuator casing so that the chamber volumes vary in the longitudinal direction of the attenuator casing.
EFFECT: each chamber preferably has an open portion located opposite the perforated screen such that acoustic waves passing through the perforated screen can be distributed into the chamber through the open portion.
