SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medical equipment, namely to means providing for perception by blind or visually impaired people of surrounding space. Portable system providing the blind or visually impaired people's perception of the surrounding space by means of sound or touch comprises two chambers separated from each other and configured to simultaneously obtain an image of the surrounding space, means for generating audio and/or tactile output signals, processing means connected to chambers and means of generating audio and/or tactile signals, wherein processing means are configured to combine images obtained in real time and to process information on the depth of elements contained in at least one vertical band of the combined image, where the vertical strip substantially covers the entire height of the combined image, wherein processing means are also configured to: separate vertical strip into one or more sections, determining an audio or tactile signal at each section according to the depth of the section and the height of the section, and determining the audio or tactile output signal based on the audio or tactile signals on each section of the vertical strip.

EFFECT: using the invention enables faster processing of information to obtain in real time an accurate depth and vertical coordinates for transformation into an audio or tactile signal.
