FIELD: optics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to optical systems which make it possible to expand the area of exit pupil of visual optical systems. System comprises a waveguide and a diffraction grating made in the waveguide. At the same time radiation is divided by means of a diffraction grating into at least two radiation beams propagating along the waveguide at angles such that one of the at least two radiation beams comes out from the side of the waveguide surface opposite to the diffraction grating, and forms unit of exit pupil, other radiation beams undergo complete internal reflection from surface of waveguide, opposite to diffraction grating, and return to diffraction grating. Formed units of the exit pupil extend the area of the exit pupil of the visual optical system.

EFFECT: universality, compactness, high diffraction efficiency of the system, possibility of expanding the area of the exit pupil while maintaining a high visual field of the optical system, providing homogeneity and brightness of the obtained image, enabling use of multispectral radiation.
