SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of hydroacoustics and can be used in problems of object detection and classification when designing hydroacoustic systems. Result is achieved by the fact that in the disclosed method, the object is detected by a spectral portrait, that is sequence of actions, such as target detection, determination of parameters, generation of classification features is replaced by matching the detection stage, determining direction and classification of the target at one time cycle, which almost twice reduces the time of detecting the threat and enables the commander of the ship to react quickly to the detected threat.

EFFECT: technical result of the invention consists in reducing the time of classification of the detected object, which will reduce the time of detecting a threat for the ship and, as a result, increase its combat stability.
