FIELD: lighting engineering.
SUBSTANCE: light source has gas-filled chamber (1) with a region of radiating plasma (2) maintained in the chamber by focused beam (3) of continuous laser (4). Plasma igniter is a pulsed laser system (9) which generates the first and second laser beams (10), (11) focused into the chamber. Plasma ignition method is characterized by the fact that the first laser beam is used to perform optical breakdown, after which a second laser beam is used to ignite a plasma whose volume and density are sufficient for steady-state plasma maintenance by a continuous laser beam. Preferably, the first laser beam is generated in mode with modulated Q of the resonator and the second laser beam is generated in the free generation mode using the solid-state laser system. In contrast to sources using electrodes for starting ignition of plasma, it is possible to optimize the geometry of the chamber, reducing convective gas flows turbulence in it and minimizing optical aberrations, as well as increasing spatial angle of plasma radiation collection.
EFFECT: creation of the most high-brightness broadband light sources with high spatial and energy stability and collection of plasma radiation in spatial angle of more than 9 cp.
