FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of converting an alkane into an alkene. Method comprises: (a) contacting an alkane and (i) an oxidising electrophile, having a base group element selected from gallium, germanium, arsenic, tin, thallium, lead, antimony, selenium, tellurium, bismuth or iodine, in an oxidised form, or (ii) an oxidising agent and a reduced form of an oxidising electrophile in a liquid medium containing an oxygenic acid to obtain an oxidised intermediate and a reduced form of an oxidising electrophile; and (b) carrying out an elimination reaction for the oxidised intermediate to obtain an alkene and an oxygenic acid.
EFFECT: disclosed method is low-temperature, wherein results in high conversion and / or high selectivity with respect to the desired product.
