FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of processing red mud and can be used to produce cast iron and slag containing titanium and rare-earth metals (REM) from red mud which is a waste of alumina production. Method involves melting red mud with reducing agent in furnace, separate discharge of cast iron and slag from furnace, at that, reducing melting is subjected to mixture of red mud, slag-forming agent and reducing agent at component ratio of 1:(0.1–0.4):(0.025–0.15) respectively, wherein melting is carried out for 45–75 minutes at temperature of 1,400–1,550 °C, then cast iron and slag are discharged from furnace. In the furnace mixture of red mud, slag-forming agent and reducing agent is supplied in the form of briquettes with size of not more than 90 mm. For briquetting red mud is used with moisture content of not more than 7 %. Slag-forming agent used is calcium hydroxide and/or lime and/or limestone. Ratio of CaO/SiO2 in briquettes is 0.6–1.2, the particle size of the red mud, slag-forming agent and reducing agent is not more than 0.7 mm before briquetting.
EFFECT: higher quality of obtained ferry iron with obtaining iron content in cast iron of not less than 98 %.
