FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to encoding of HDR images. Method of decoding an image with high dynamic range of HDR in JPEG format comprises receiving data of a base layer, wherein the base layer data includes a low dynamic range version of the HDR image; receiving a coding change parameter indicating change of base layer data after coding; receiving residual data of ratios in one or more APP11 segments of the HDR-image marker, wherein the residual relationships data includes information describing ratios of illumination values of the HDR image and corresponding illumination values of the base layer data; calculating a decoder change parameter for base layer data; and comparing the encoder change parameter with the decoder change parameter to determine whether the received base layer data have changed after encoding.

EFFECT: technical result consists in providing object structure for storage, exchange and playback of high dynamic range images, which is backward compatible with existing technology of viewing images.
