FIELD: processing of materials by cutting.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used for milling heavy loaded high-speed worm gear wheels. Multi-start worm cutter is designed for operation on gear-hobbing machines with tangential feed and comprises serially arranged sections of rough teeth, finishing teeth and calibrating teeth made with milled necks. Calibrating teeth are located with angle of inclination of helical line to axis of cutter to 45° and are provided with a lowered occipital part at 0.5–0.6 mm on each side relative to the calibrating tooth thickness on the entire length of the tooth with an occlusion angle of 8–10°. Said angle makes formation of profile ribbon at distance of 1.2–1.5 mm from front plane of tooth.
EFFECT: longer service life of cutter due to possibility of multiple resection on front surface without loss of accuracy.
