SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing a catalyst composition and a method of converting aromatic hydrocarbons containing feedstock using a catalyst composition, produced by such method. Method of producing the catalyst composition involves the following steps: (a) treating zeolite ZSM-5 with an alkaline solution containing a metal hydroxide and having a pH of at least 8, to obtain an alkaline solution treated zeolite, followed by washing with water and drying, and then subjecting the zeolite treated with an alkaline solution to ion exchange by treating the zeolite with a solution containing an ammonium salt to obtain a treated zeolite, (b) extruding a mixture of the treated zeolite and binder, where the binder is a refractory oxide selected from a group consisting of silicon dioxide, zirconium dioxide, titanium dioxide and mixtures thereof, and bringing zeolite into contact with a solution containing a fluorine-containing compound, wherein the solution containing a fluorine-containing compound contains a compound, selected from a group consisting of fluorosilicates and fluorotitanates, (c) increasing temperature of the extrudates obtained at step (b) to at least 200 °C, and (d) combining extrudates obtained at step (c) with one or more metals selected from the group consisting of 10 and 11 of the periodic table of IUPAC elements.

EFFECT: technical result is obtaining a product with high content of para-xylene with limited loss of xylene.
