FIELD: processing of audio signals.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a means for audio encoding and decoding. N audio objects, with N>1, and time-varying metadata associated with N sound objects are received, describing how to represent N audio objects for playback on the decoder side. The result of backward compatible downmixing is calculated, containing M downmixing signals, with M=N, by forming combinations of N audio objects. Time-varying additional information is calculated containing parameters that provide recovery of N audio objects. The result of backward compatible downmixing and additional information are included in the data stream for transmission to the decoder. Additionally included in the data stream are: multiple metadata instances defining the corresponding required presentation settings for representing N audio objects, and for each metadata instance, transition data containing the start time and duration of interpolation from the current presentation setting to the required presentation setting determined by the metadata instance.

EFFECT: increased efficiency of audio encoding and decoding.
