SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a mattress (1) having at least one first layer (10), a second layer (12) and a third layer (14), and the second layer (12) contains spring elements (16) and is located between the first layer (10 ) and a third layer (14). Proposed is a mattress having a lengthwise extension with a head region, a shoulder region, a thigh region and a foot region and extending in a transverse direction perpendicular to said lengthwise extension. In this case, the thickness of the third layer (14), which is defined as the distance from the outer surface of the third layer (14) facing in the direction from the second layer (12) to the second layer (12), locally varies by an amount exceeding the value predetermined by the surface structure of the third layer (14) on its outer surface. The variability of the thickness of the third layer (14) runs in the direction of the lengthwise extension. The thickness of the third layer (14) in the transverse direction remains constant at different points along the length. The plurality of depressions in the first layer (10) and / or the third layer (14) extend with a constant cross-section in the transverse direction. The cross-section of the recesses preferably depends on the thickness of the third layer (14). Also proposed is a mattress in which the outer surface of the third layer is flat and a mattress in which variability is continuous in one direction.
