FIELD: acoustics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an acoustic wall unit as well as a wall retrofit kit for providing such an acoustic wall unit. The acoustic wall unit has internal and external walls, which are essentially parallel to each other and there is a gap between them. The acoustic wall unit also has an air pump located in the gap; and a sound masking circuit configured to detect sound waves in a predetermined frequency range, and in response to the detection of sound waves in a predetermined frequency range of air pump control to inject air into the gap to actively mask the detected sound waves as they pass from the outside the outer wall to the inner side of the inner wall, while active masking is performed using reverberation; wherein at least one of the inner and outer walls contains glass, wherein the air pump is controlled by a sound masking circuit to create a dynamic non-point source of reverberant noise that is suppressed and substantially uniform across the gap. Reverberation noise is generated on demand to disorganize the intelligibility of the detected sound waves as they pass from the outside of the outer wall to the inside of the inner wall; and the technical result is achieved with a wall retrofit kit to provide such an acoustic wall unit.
