SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in internal combustion engines. The method of operation of the internal combustion engine is that the preliminary prepared compressed fuel mixture is sucked through the intake valve (12) into the over-piston space of the working cylinder (8) by lowering the piston (24) from the position that is as close as possible to the cylinder cover. The fuel mixture is ignited with a plug (16) located in the cylinder cover. The resulting combustion products are expanded due to the continued lowering of the piston (24), with the transfer of work to the output shaft (14). The ignition of the fuel mixture is carried out at the very beginning of the process of sucking it into the cylinder (8), placing the plug (16) in the flow of the fuel mixture leaving the intake valve (12). The intake valve (12) is left open during the combustion process. The intake valve (12) is closed at the time of lowering the piston (24) by an amount equal to the full stroke of the piston divided by the specified degree of adiabatic expansion in the operating cycle of the engine.

EFFECT: more complete expansion of the combustion products.
