FIELD: holographic protective elements.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a protective element for the production of valuable documents, such as banknotes (1), checks, etc. The protective element has an embossed hologram that has many pixels (5), the area of which, respectively, is indistinguishable to the unaided eye in at least one dimension. According to the invention, the area of each of these pixels (5) has first partial area (6) and second partial area (7). First partial area (6) consists of holographic lattice structure (8) with a period from 500 nm to 2.0 mcm. It is designed to cause a holographic effect of pixel (5) when viewed in first order (R-1). Second partial area (7) consists of sub-wave lattice structure (9) with a period from 150 nm to 450 nm or a “moth eye” structure or a light-absorbing microstructure. It is designed to cause the color or light-and-shadow effect of pixel (5) when viewed at sliding angle (R_θ). At least some of pixels (5) have third partial area (7E), which is either a purely light-absorbing structure, or is smooth and coated with metal, and the surface fraction of which causes the intensity of pixel (5) to match at sliding angle (R_θ) and in transmitted light (T_I, T_II).
