SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a cartridge (100) for an aerosol-generating system and to an aerosol-generating system. The cartridge or system comprises a storage compartment containing a liquid aerosol-forming substrate (131), wherein the storage compartment has a first part (130) and a second part (135) interconnected so that liquid in the first part can pass into the second part, an airflow channel (140) extending between the first part and the second part of the storage compartment, and a fluid-permeable aerosol-generating element (120) located between the first part and the second part of the storage compartment. The aerosol-generating element has a first side and a second side opposite to the first side, wherein the first side of the aerosol-generating element forms a part of the airflow channel and the second side of the aerosol-generating element is in contact with the liquid from the second part of the storage compartment so that the liquid aerosol-forming substrate in the first part of the storage compartment must pass into the second part of the storage compartment to reach the fluid-permeable aerosol-generating element.

EFFECT: adequate and stable supply of fluid to the aerosol-generating element is ensured even when the fluid storage compartment is empty, wherein fluid leakage is minimised and complex components such as pumps are not required.
