FIELD: pipeline systems.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and system for checking a pipeline for fluid transportation. The method for checking the pipeline for fluid transportation includes: generating a pressure pulse with a pressure profile in the pipeline by closing a gate valve connected to the pipeline; registering the pressure profile using a sensor connected to the pipeline; calculating the first derivative and the second derivative of the specified pressure profile; identifying the moment of the beginning of closing the gate valve, the moment of the end of closing the gate valve and the initial moment of closing the gate valve at which the gate valve is closed enough to generate an acoustic pulse, based on the first derivative and the second derivative of the pressure profile; and determining the pipeline parameter characterizing the pipeline, using the specified moment of the beginning of closing the gate valve, the moment of the end of closing the gate valve and the initial moment of closing the gate valve. The system for checking the pipeline for fluid transportation comprises: a gate valve connected to the pipeline, and made with the possibility of generating a pressure pulse in the pipeline by closing the gate valve; a sensor connected to the pipeline, and made with the possibility of registering the pressure profile of the pressure pulse generated in the pipeline; and a processor made with the possibility of analyzing the registered pressure profile by calculating the first and second derivatives of the pressure profile to identify the moment of the beginning of closing the gate valve, the moment of the end of closing the gate valve, the initial moment of closing the gate valve at which the gate valve is closed enough to generate an acoustic pulse, and determining the pipeline parameter characterizing the pipeline using the specified moment of the beginning of closing the gate valve, the moment of the end of closing the gate valve and the initial moment of closing the gate valve.

EFFECT: improved identification of the location of obstacles or defects along the pipeline.
