SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to medical technology. The detection system and method use an implantable marker containing at least one fragment of material with a large Barkhausen jump (LBJ). The marker is used to mark a site of tissue in the body for subsequent surgery, and the magnetic detection system contains a hand-held probe to excite the marker at a strength below the magnetizing field strength for bistable magnetization reversal of the marker, causing a harmonic response to be generated in a sub-bistable mode that enables detection and to determine the location of the marker. The implantable marker may also have a length less than the critical length required to initiate bistable magnetization reversal in the LBJ material..
EFFECT: implantable marker is used to mark a site of tissue in the body for subsequent surgery.
