FIELD: mechanical engineering.

SUBSTANCE: method includes heating the surface layer of the rotating wheel with a friction element and turning said surface layer of the rotating wheel with a cutter, wherein a brake shoe corresponding to said wheel of a rail vehicle is used as a friction element, and the surface layer of the rotating wheel is heated with a pressing force of 0.5 to 2 MPa. The brake shoe is therein installed so that the central angle between the cutter and the brake shoe is in the range from 2 to 180 degrees. An additional stage of turning can be executed without heating the surface layer with the brake shoe. The surface layer of the rotating wheel can be heated before turning.

EFFECT: simplification of recovering the profile of the rolling surface of wheels of rail vehicles, increased durability of the cutting equipment, and eliminated irreversible deterioration of mechanical properties, in particular, hardness, after processing the surface and near-surface layers of the wheel, are achieved.
