SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to restore the profile of the rolling surfaces of rail transport wheels during repairs. The method includes heating the surface layer of a rotating wheel with a friction element and mechanical processing of said surface layer. Heating of the surface layer of the rotating wheel by the friction element and mechanical processing of said surface layer are carried out simultaneously. For machining, an end mill is used.

EFFECT: durability of the cutting tool increases, the processing time decreases and the amount of cut allowance decreases without deteriorating the mechanical properties of the wheels.
