In the method for controlling the engine of a hybrid vehicle, the engine is driven at a first rotation rate when the value of charge of the accumulator is decreased to a first value. The engine is then switched to a second rotation rate greater than the first rate when the engine is driven at the first rate, and the charge value is decreased to a second value less than the first value. The engine continues to be driven until the charge value is equal to or greater than the charge end value greater than the first value. The engine is switched to the first rotation rate when the engine rotates at the second rate and the charge value is increased to a third value less than the charge end value. The third charge value is greater than the first value.

EFFECT: sudden sensation of the engine sound is limited.
