SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of computer technology for converting an image dynamic range. An image processing device contains a receiving device for receiving an image signal that contains at least an encoded image and a reference value of a target display. The reference value of the target display indicates a dynamic range of the target display, for which the encoded image is encoded. A processor of the dynamic range forms an output image by using the dynamic range conversion to the encoded image in response to the reference value of the target display. An output outputs an output image signal containing the output image to, for example, suitable display. In addition, the dynamic range conversion can be performed in response to an identifier of a display dynamic range received from the display. The invention can be used to form an improved image with a high dynamic range (HDR) from, for example, an image with a low dynamic range (LDR) and vice versa.

EFFECT: improvement of dynamic range conversion that can adapt to specific characteristics of image rendering.
