FIELD: image processing means.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to encoding/decoding images. Method for encoding an image with a wide dynamic range comprises the steps of: transforming image with a wide dynamic range into an image with a narrower dynamic range of brightness by applying: a) image normalizing with a wide dynamic range, b) calculating the gamma function for normalized brightness, providing a gamma-converted brightness, c) applying the first tonal display, providing luminance signals, and d) applying an arbitrary monotonically increasing tonal display function displaying luminance signals for outputting luminance signals of an image with a narrower dynamic range; outputting in the image signal the codification of the colors of the pixels of the image with a narrower dynamic range of brightness; and outputting in the image signal values that encode the function forms of the above color transformations as metadata, or values for their inverse functions.
EFFECT: providing improved encoding/decoding of an image with a wide dynamic range.
