SUBSTANCE: invention relates to encoding/decoding images. Method for encoding an image with a wide dynamic range comprises the steps of: transforming image with a wide dynamic range into an image with a narrower dynamic range of brightness by applying: a) normalizing an image with a wide dynamic range to a luminance signal axis scale equal to [0.1], providing a normalized image with a wide dynamic range with normalized colours having normalized brightness, b) calculating a logarithmic gamma-function based on normalized brightness, providing brightness signals, and c) applying an arbitrary tone display function which displays luminance signals to image brightness output signals with a narrower dynamic range; outputting, in an image signal, codification of colours of pixels of an image with a wide dynamic range and outputting in the image signal in metadata values which code the shape of the function of the arbitrary function of tonal display.
EFFECT: technical result is providing improved encoding/decoding of an image with a wide dynamic range.
