FIELD: computing technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of computing technology for measuring the size of elements using a video monitoring apparatus. Proposed are a method and apparatus for providing a graphic overlay for measuring the size of objects using a video monitoring apparatus. One or several measuring cursors are placed on the pixels of an image of the object. One or several planes are determined, parallel or normal to the base surface or line and passing through the surface points associated with the measuring cursors. The semitransparent graphic overlay is placed on the pixels with the corresponding surface points with the three-dimensional surface coordinates lesser than the preset distance from the plane(s) in order to assist the user with the placement of the measuring cursors.
EFFECT: increase in the quality of image depth measurement.
