SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measuring equipment and can be used for controlling the depth of laying an optical cable, including a cable without conductive elements. Essence: the source of directed acoustic impact is placed on the surface above the cable, and the backscattering characteristic of the optical fibre is measured using a phase-sensitive pulse optical reflectometer. The cable is therein subjected to the impact of an acoustic signal at the same frequency. The source of directed acoustic effect is moved along the normal to the axis of the optical cable in one direction from the cable, and the backscattering characteristics of the optical fibre are measured using a phase-sensitive pulse optical reflectometer at three points located along the normal to the axis of the optical cable at a distance
