SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measuring technology and can be used to control the depth of laying an optical cable, including a cable without conductive elements. According to the method for controlling the depth of laying an optical cable, a directional acoustic effect is created on the cable and, using a phase-sensitive pulse optical reflectometer, the backscattering characteristic of an optical fiber is measured, while an acoustic signal is generated from two sources of directional acoustic influence with output signals equal in level, but different by frequency, located vertically above the cable at a known distance from each other so that one source of directional acoustic impact is located on the surface above the cable, and the second source of directional acoustic impact is above it, strictly vertically at a known distance H, the signal amplitudes at the frequencies of acoustic sources are determined from the backscattering characteristic of the optical fiber, measured using a phase-sensitive optical reflectometer, and the depth of the optical cable is estimated from the distance from the cable to the surface above the cable h, which is calculated by the formula

EFFECT: elimination of the occurrence of errors caused by the movement of the source of directional acoustic impact, simplification of control of the position of the source of directional acoustic impact, reduction of the volume of measurements.
