FIELD: measuring technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of measuring technology and concerns a method for determining the location of damage to an optical cable. When implementing the method using a pulsed optical reflectometer, the backscattering characteristic of the optical fiber is measured, on which a section with an event displaying damage to the optical fiber is isolated. With the help of a phase-sensitive pulsed optical reflectometer, the backscattering characteristic of the same fiber is measured and, based on the results of joint processing of these backscattering characteristics, the damaged area is determined. Then, a source of directional acoustic vibration action operating at the same frequency is moved over the cable and the backscattering characteristic of the optical fiber is measured using a phase-sensitive reflectometer. The place of damage is determined by the location of the source of acoustic vibration above the cable. The location of the acoustic vibration source relative to the fiber axis is determined at the site of the optical fiber backscattering characteristic, which was determined as a site with damage to the optical fiber.

EFFECT: reducing the measurement error and expanding the scope of the method.
