SUBSTANCE: invention is intended for determining the size of a defect during ultrasonic testing using a phased array transducer. The substance of the invention lies in the fact that the determination of the size of the defect during ultrasonic testing using a phased array sensor is based on the analysis of S, C or D scans or their combination, while in a heated or cooled test object, the true dimensions of the defect Р0 are calculated by the formula Р0=k(1/Т0-1/Т)+Р, where P is the size of the acoustic image of the defect on the scan at temperature T, k is the coefficient equal to the slope of the linear dependence Р*(1/Т*), determined experimentally on a tuning sample with a known defect by slowly cooling or heating the sample and determining the size of the acoustic image P* on scans at different temperatures T*, Т0 is the temperature at which the size of the acoustic image of a defect on the tuning sample coincides with its true size.

EFFECT: reduction of the error in determining the size of a defect detected in a heated or cooled industrial test object during ultrasonic flaw detection with a phased array sensor in the process of sorting.
